How it works
The image is re-encoded on your device as JPEG or WebP at the quality you choose. Lossy encoders spend bits where eyes notice them, so photos usually survive 70–85% quality with little visible change while shedding most of their weight — the live preview and size readout let you judge with your own eyes instead of guessing.
Two honest notes: compressing an already-compressed JPEG re-encodes it (quality only ever goes down — keep originals), and PNG input converted to lossy formats trades exactness for size, which is the point but worth knowing. If the file is physically larger than needed (a 4000px photo for a 800px slot), resize first — it saves far more than quality reduction alone.

How much can I compress without visible loss?
For photos, 75–85% JPEG/WebP quality is usually visually indistinguishable at normal viewing sizes while cutting the file dramatically. Text-heavy screenshots show artifacts sooner — compare the preview before downloading.
JPEG or WebP?
WebP typically produces 20–30% smaller files at similar quality and supports transparency; JPEG's advantage is universal compatibility with older software. For the web, WebP; for email attachments to unknown recipients, JPEG.
Why did my PNG get bigger as a PNG?
PNG is lossless — this tool compresses by re-encoding to lossy JPEG/WebP. If you must keep PNG (exact pixels, sharp-edged graphics), reduce the dimensions with the resizer instead.
