How it works
US tipping conventions the calculator reflects: 15-20% is customary at sit-down restaurants (pre-tax bill is the traditional base, though tipping on the total is common), 10-15% for delivery, and $1-2 per drink at bars. The split function divides the tip evenly — for itemized splitting where diners had very different orders, split the subtotal by person first, then apply the percentage.
Tip = bill × percentage; total = bill + tip; per-person = total ÷ people, with the tip-per-person shown too. Whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is a matter of local custom — enter whichever amount you want to tip on. Informational only; tipping norms are customs, not rules.
