How it works
US tipping conventions the calculator reflects: 15-20% is customary at sit-down restaurants (pre-tax bill is the traditional base, though tipping on the total is common), 10-15% for delivery, and $1-2 per drink at bars. The split function divides the tip evenly — for itemized splitting where diners had very different orders, split the subtotal by person first, then apply the percentage.
Tip = bill × percentage; total = bill + tip; per-person = total ÷ people, with the tip-per-person shown too. Whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is a matter of local custom — enter whichever amount you want to tip on. Informational only; tipping norms are customs, not rules.

Do I tip on the pre-tax amount or the total?
Tradition says pre-tax, and etiquette guides still recommend it. In practice the difference is small — on a $50 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on the total adds just 80 cents — so many people tip on the total for simplicity.
How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?
15–20% is the customary range for table service, with 18–20% typical for good service. Counter service is discretionary. Customs differ widely by country — in some, tipping isn't expected at all.
How do we split an uneven bill fairly?
The even split here is the simple answer. If orders varied a lot, have each person compute their own share with their items plus their proportion of tax and tip.
