How it works

The baseline comes from the U.S. National Academies' adequate intake (AI): about 3.7 liters of total water per day for adult men and 2.7 liters for women — with roughly 20% of that typically arriving through food, leaving about 3.0 and 2.2 liters from beverages. Exercise adds an estimated 0.35 liters per 30 minutes of activity to replace sweat losses.

The honest science: there is no magic universal number. The AI values are population averages, thirst is a genuinely good regulator for healthy people, and needs rise with heat, altitude, pregnancy, and illness. Is the '8 glasses a day' rule real?

It's folklore that happens to land near the right ballpark. The National Academies' guidance is about 9 cups of beverages daily for women and 13 for men on average — but it explicitly treats thirst as a reliable guide for healthy people.

Does coffee count toward my water intake?

Yes — the National Academies count all beverages, including caffeinated ones, toward total water. The diuretic effect of normal coffee consumption is too small to cancel its fluid contribution.

Can I drink too much water?

Yes — drinking far beyond thirst, especially during endurance events, can dilute blood sodium (hyponatremia), which is dangerous. More is not automatically better; match intake to thirst and activity.
