How to use this tool
- Enter your current grade in the course (as a percentage).
- Enter how much of the course grade the final exam is worth.
- Enter the overall grade you want — the required final-exam score appears instantly, plus a table for common targets.
How it works
Your course grade is a weighted average: final grade = current grade × (1 − w) + exam score × w, where w is the final's weight. Solving for the exam score gives: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w.
Example: you have an 82%, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90% overall. Needed = (90 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 ≈ 108.7% — over 100%, which tells you a 90 isn't reachable and lets you re-aim before exam week rather than after.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need on my final to pass?
Enter your current grade, the final's weight, and your school's passing threshold (often 60% or 70%) as the target — the tool shows the exact score required.
What if the required score is over 100%?
The target isn't mathematically reachable with that exam weight. Aim for the highest reachable grade instead — the table shows what each score on the final would get you.
Where do I find the final's weight?
Your course syllabus — look for the grade breakdown (e.g., 'Final exam: 25%'). If the syllabus lists points instead of percentages, the final's weight is its points divided by total course points.
